Bathroom Waterproofing: How to Do It Right

Updated:

A leak in the bathroom is the most common and most expensive renovation mistake. Water reaches the neighbours below, destroys the screed and the finish, and the culprit is usually not the plumbing but skipped or badly done waterproofing. Here is how to do it so you forget about the problem for years.

Where the layer is needed

  • The entire bathroom floor, running up the walls by 15–20 cm.
  • Walls in the shower and bath zone, across the full splash height.
  • All junctions and pipe inlets, the most vulnerable spots.
  • The threshold and the exit to the hallway, so water stays inside the room.

Waterproofing is done before the screed and before laying tiles, so it is part of the rough works. Redoing it after tiling is only possible with a full tear-out, which is why the mistake costs so much.

Materials

The working choice is a brush-applied (cement-polymer) waterproofing in two coats, with reinforcing tape at corners and junctions. Roll materials are used less often, usually on large areas. What matters is a continuous layer with no gaps and a correct slope towards the drain.

How to accept it

Before the screed, ask for a flood test: the bathroom is filled with water for 24 hours to check it does not reach the neighbours. Document the layer and the flood test with photos, because that is your insurance. A reliable contractor does the plumbing rough-in and waterproofing with a warranty on the hidden works, the same way it runs inside construction works from plot to keys. On what goes on top of that layer, see Tiling: common mistakes.
